Salon marketing for the first visit and the one after it

Salon marketing from MBI is three campaigns run for a salon: a neighborhood direct-mail grand-opening or first-visit offer campaign with a specific discount or complimentary add-on, a targeted Facebook and Instagram promotion campaign using visually led service content and an initial-booking offer, and an opt-in SMS rebooking, win-back, birthday and promotion campaign that also covers last-minute openings.

Three campaigns

Which campaigns bring a first-time client into a salon?

The short answer

Three. A neighborhood direct-mail grand-opening or first-visit offer campaign carries a specific discount or complimentary add-on. A targeted Facebook and Instagram promotion campaign uses visually led service content and an initial-booking offer. An opt-in SMS campaign covers rebooking, win-backs, birthday and promotion messages, and last-minute openings. MBI plans the drop, builds the ad creative and runs the text campaign.

The three concepts. The three researched salon campaigns are a neighborhood direct-mail grand-opening or first-visit offer campaign, with a specific discount or complimentary add-on; a targeted Facebook and Instagram promotion campaign using visually led service content and an initial-booking offer; and an opt-in SMS rebooking, win-back, birthday/promotion, and last-minute-opening campaign.

Which nearby households does salon direct mail reach?

The short answer

Households near the salon. Common salon mail pieces promote grand openings, new-client offers, seasonal services, loyalty, referrals, weekday offers and gift certificates to nearby households, and the neighborhood grand-opening or first-visit drop carries one specific discount or complimentary add-on. MBI selects the addresses, designs the piece, prints it and mails it.

What the mail carries. Common salon mail pieces promote grand openings, new-client offers, seasonal services, loyalty, referrals, weekday offers, and gift certificates to nearby households.

USPS Domestic Mail Manual 602.5 provides that each address, except for mail bearing an alternative address format, in a mailing at commercial First-Class Mail presorted or automation prices or USPS Marketing Mail prices is subject to the Move Update standard, and that each address and associated addressee used on the mailpieces in a mailing must be updated within 95 days before the mailing date with one of the USPS-approved methods, which include Address Change Service and the National Change of Address Linkage System (NCOALink).

Facebook and Instagram

Which services and offers do salon Facebook ads promote?

The short answer

Services, and one specific special promotion. The campaign to run is local Facebook and Instagram ads featuring services and a specific special promotion, to drive initial bookings; behind them, a targeted Facebook and Instagram promotion campaign using visually led service content and an initial-booking offer. MBI builds that creative and runs it for the salon.

The guidance for a salon on Meta. The guidance for a salon on Meta is to run local Facebook and Instagram ads featuring services and a specific special promotion to drive initial bookings.

Meta's advertising standards state that advertisers are responsible for understanding and complying with all applicable laws and regulations, and that ads must not promote products, services, schemes or offers using identified deceptive or misleading practices, including those meant to scam people out of money or personal information.

Meta, Advertising Standards

FTC advertising guidance for small business states that advertising must be truthful and non-deceptive, that advertisers must have evidence to back up their claims, and that advertisements cannot be unfair; an ad is deceptive if it contains a statement, or omits information, that is likely to mislead consumers acting reasonably under the circumstances and is material to a consumer's decision to buy or use the product.

SMS

When does salon text message marketing reach a client?

The short answer

After the client has opted in. CTIA's messaging principles say message senders should support opt-in mechanisms and that messages should be sent only after the consumer has opted-in to receive them. The campaign to run then uses consented texts for appointment reminders, rebooking prompts, seasonal promotions, win-backs, birthday messages and rapidly filling cancellations.

The guidance for a salon’s texting. The guidance for a salon's texting is to use consented texts for appointment reminders, rebooking prompts, seasonal promotions, win-backs, birthday messages, and rapidly filling cancellations.

CTIA's Messaging Principles and Best Practices state that Message Senders should support opt-in mechanisms and that messages should be sent only after the Consumer has opted-in to receive them, and list entering a telephone number through a website, clicking a button on a mobile webpage, sending a message from the Consumer's mobile device that contains an advertising keyword, and signing up at a point-of-sale (POS) or other Message Sender on-site location among the mechanisms by which a Consumer might demonstrate opt-in consent; Message Senders should also document opt-in consent by retaining seven kinds of data where applicable, among them the timestamp of consent acquisition and the consent acquisition medium.

Loyalty and rebooking

What brings a client back to the salon after a first visit?

The short answer

Loyalty, referrals and gift certificates on the mailed side; rebooking prompts, seasonal promotions, win-backs and birthday messages on the consented text side, with last-minute openings covered by the same opt-in campaign. MBI produces the mailed pieces and runs the text campaign, and CTIA's principles say message senders should create and vet their own opt-in lists.

CTIA's Messaging Principles and Best Practices state that Message Senders should ensure that Consumers have the ability to opt-out of receiving Messages at any time, should support multiple mechanisms of opt-out including phone call, email or text, and should acknowledge and honor all Consumer opt-out requests by sending one final opt-out confirmation message per campaign; and that Message Senders should not use opt-in lists that have been rented, sold, or shared to send messages and should create and vet their own opt-in lists.

Questions

Questions a salon asks before the cards go out

Searched for beauty salon advertising, beauty salon marketing or hair salon marketing? Same work, same answers.

  1. How does mail from a salon reach someone who has never been in?

Through a drop to the households near the salon. Common salon mail pieces promote grand openings, new-client offers, seasonal services, loyalty, referrals, weekday offers and gift certificates to nearby households, and the first-visit card carries a specific discount or complimentary add-on. MBI selects the addresses, designs the card, prints it and mails it.

  2. What does a salon's grand-opening or first-visit offer campaign look like?

A salon grand-opening campaign is a neighborhood direct-mail grand-opening or first-visit offer campaign, with a specific discount or complimentary add-on. MBI plans the neighborhood drop, designs the card around that one offer, prints it and mails it, so the card carries one offer: the specific discount or complimentary add-on.

  3. What is a salon quoted for when it mails a postcard?

Producing the salon postcard and mailing it are the two costs, and seven decisions move those two numbers, among them Quantity, Format and finished size, Paper and weight, and Postage, mail class, and sortation. A salon sees the other three, and all seven in full, at /capabilities/direct-mail/direct-mail-cost.

  4. How often does a salon's mailing list have to be matched against change-of-address records?

Within 95 days of a salon's drop date. USPS requires each address in a mailing at commercial First-Class Mail presorted or automation prices, or USPS Marketing Mail prices, to be updated within 95 days before the mailing date by an approved method such as NCOALink or Address Change Service; mail bearing an alternative address format is excepted.

  5. Who may a salon send a rebooking text to?

A salon client who has opted in. CTIA's messaging principles say message senders should support opt-in mechanisms, that messages should be sent only after the consumer has opted-in to receive them, and that senders should not use opt-in lists that have been rented, sold or shared but should create and vet their own.

  6. What keeps a salon's offer honest on Facebook and Instagram?

The salon's own evidence. Meta's advertising standards say advertisers are responsible for understanding and complying with all applicable laws and regulations, and that ads must not promote products, services, schemes or offers using identified deceptive or misleading practices. FTC guidance for small business names three principles, among them that advertisers must have evidence to back up their claims.

  7. What does a salon campaign have printed?

6x9 direct-mail postcards, coupon or first-visit offer cards, and gift-certificate promotions. MBI designs and produces the three of them and mails the postcards; data, print and delivery have been in-house since 1989, so one team answers for the whole campaign instead of a client coordinating three vendors.
