Music school marketing for trial lessons and enrollment

Music school marketing from MBI is three campaigns for a school that teaches music lessons: a targeted postcard carrying a discounted trial lesson or the benefits of enrolling, with a QR code on it and online ads running in parallel; Facebook and Instagram enrollment campaigns built around trial offers and video commercials designed to drive registrations; and follow-up texts to a trial lead who has given separate SMS consent.

The campaigns

What is music school marketing built out of?

The short answer

Three campaigns, and they are a set rather than a running order: a discounted-trial-lesson music-school postcard campaign, a Facebook and Instagram video or trial-offer enrollment campaign, and a consented trial-lead follow-up SMS campaign. One team plans the card, prints it, mails it, and runs the ads and the texts.

The three campaigns. The three researched music-school campaigns are a discounted-trial-lesson music-school postcard campaign, a Facebook/Instagram video or trial-offer enrollment campaign, and a consented trial-lead follow-up SMS campaign.

One team. MBI is one company that plans, produces, and delivers the work that brings in the next customer, from a single team in DeLand, Florida; data, print, and delivery have been in-house since 1989.

Direct mail

What does music school direct mail put on the card?

The short answer

One offer, and a QR code: a discounted trial lesson, or the benefits of enrolling. The postcard is targeted, and online ads run in parallel with it. MBI plans the drop, prints the card and mails it; data, print and delivery have been in-house since 1989.

What the sources name. Music-school direct-mail guidance documents targeted postcards featuring discounted trial lessons or enrollment benefits, with QR codes and parallel online ads.

USPS Domestic Mail Manual 602.5 provides that each address, except for mail bearing an alternative address format, in a mailing at commercial First-Class Mail presorted or automation prices or USPS Marketing Mail prices is subject to the Move Update standard, and that each address and associated addressee used on the mailpieces in a mailing must be updated within 95 days before the mailing date with one of the USPS-approved methods, which include Address Change Service and the National Change of Address Linkage System (NCOALink).

Facebook and Instagram

How are music school Facebook ads put together?

The short answer

Out of trial offers and video commercials. A music school's Facebook and Instagram enrollment campaigns are built around those two and are designed to drive registrations, and the campaign runs as a video one or as a trial-offer one. MBI builds the creative and runs the ads.

Meta's advertising standards state that advertisers are responsible for understanding and complying with all applicable laws and regulations; that ads must not promote products, services, schemes or offers using identified deceptive or misleading practices, including those meant to scam people out of money or personal information; and that the ad review process starts automatically before ads begin running and is typically completed within 24 hours, although it may take longer in some cases.

The offer

Which offers does music studio enrollment marketing lead with?

The short answer

Two: a discounted trial lesson, and the benefits of enrolling. A targeted postcard features one or the other. The Facebook and Instagram enrollment campaigns are built around trial offers and video commercials and are designed to drive registrations. MBI designs and prints the card and runs the campaign.

FTC advertising guidance for small business states that advertising must be truthful and non-deceptive, that advertisers must have evidence to back up their claims, and that advertisements cannot be unfair; an ad is deceptive when it is likely to mislead consumers acting reasonably under the circumstances and is material — that is, important to a consumer's decision to buy or use the product.

SMS

What has to happen before music school text message marketing starts?

The short answer

Separate SMS consent, collected before the first message goes out. The texting follows up a trial lead; a broader bulk-text acquisition campaign is not established for a music school. CTIA's messaging principles say Message Senders should not use opt-in lists that have been rented, sold, or shared to send messages and should create and vet their own opt-in lists.

What the sources name. The music-school source anticipates texting trial leads and stresses collecting separate SMS consent before the first message; it does not establish a broader bulk-text acquisition campaign.

CTIA's Messaging Principles and Best Practices state that Message Senders should support opt-in mechanisms and that messages should be sent only after the Consumer has opted-in to receive them, and list entering a telephone number through a website, clicking a button on a mobile webpage, sending a message containing an advertising keyword, initiating the text message exchange, signing up at a point-of-sale or other on-site location, and opting-in over the phone using IVR among the mechanisms by which a Consumer might demonstrate opt-in consent; Message Senders should also document opt-in consent by retaining seven kinds of data where applicable, among them the timestamp of consent acquisition and the consent acquisition medium.

CTIA Messaging Principles and Best Practices, May 2023, §5.1.2

CTIA's Messaging Principles and Best Practices state that Message Senders should ensure that Consumers have the ability to opt-out of receiving Messages at any time, should support multiple mechanisms of opt-out including phone call, email, or text, and should acknowledge and honor all Consumer opt-out requests by sending one final opt-out confirmation message per campaign; and that Message Senders should not use opt-in lists that have been rented, sold, or shared to send messages and should create and vet their own opt-in lists.

Questions

Questions a music school asks before it mails

Searched for music studio marketing, music lesson marketing or music academy marketing? Same work, same answers.

  1. What goes on a music school postcard?

A discounted trial lesson, or the benefits of enrolling — and a QR code. Those are what the targeted card features, with online ads running in parallel. MBI plans the trial-lesson card, prints it and mails it.

  2. Does a music school's Facebook campaign have to run video?

No. A music school's enrollment campaign runs as a video campaign or as a trial-offer one, and MBI builds the creative either way. Meta's ad review process starts automatically before ads begin running, and is typically completed within 24 hours, although it may take longer in some cases. Additionally, ads may be reviewed again, including after they are live.

  3. How does a music school collect the consent it needs to text a trial lead?

Separately, and before the first message. CTIA's messaging principles say Message Senders should support opt-in mechanisms and that messages should be sent only after the Consumer has opted-in to receive them, and list entering a telephone number through a website and signing up at an on-site location among the mechanisms by which a Consumer might demonstrate opt-in consent.

  4. Who prints the music school postcard, and who mails it?

One company. MBI plans, produces and delivers the work that brings in the next customer, from a single team in DeLand, Florida, and data, print and delivery have been in-house since 1989. Printing at MBI is commercial and variable-data printing, in-house.

  5. Which claims does a music school have to be able to back up?

Every claim a music school's card or ad makes. FTC guidance for small business says advertising must be truthful and non-deceptive, that advertisers must have evidence to back up their claims, and that advertisements cannot be unfair. An ad is deceptive when it is likely to mislead consumers acting reasonably under the circumstances and is material to their decision.

  6. Why does one music school's postcard quote differ from another's?

Producing the trial-lesson postcard and mailing it are the two costs behind every quote, and seven decisions move those two numbers — among them Quantity, Format and finished size, Paper and weight, and Postage, mail class, and sortation. A school can read the other three, and all seven together, at /capabilities/direct-mail/direct-mail-cost.

  7. How are the addresses on a music school mailing kept current?

Against the postal file, before a music school's trial-lesson drop. USPS Move Update requires each address in a mailing at commercial First-Class Mail presorted or automation prices, or USPS Marketing Mail prices, to be updated within 95 days before the mailing date by an approved method, ACS and NCOALink among them. Mail bearing an alternative address format is excepted.
